A Bethel bed-and-breakfast since 1875

Chapman Inn opened its doors in 1875 on the Bethel town common and has been receiving travelers ever since. Set in the western foothills of Maine, the Inn sits within walking distance of the Bethel Historic District and within a short drive of Sunday River, the Mahoosuc Range, and the White Mountain National Forest.

Where you will be

Bethel, Maine is a small four-season town in Oxford County, Maine, on the upper reaches of the Androscoggin River. The village is a quiet base for day trips into the backcountry: Grafton Notch State Park and its waterfalls are a short drive north, the covered bridges of the Sunday River watershed are just outside town, and the high summits of the Appalachian Trail rise within the hour.

From the front door of the Inn, every natural feature in the Heritage Chronicle is within ninety minutes — and most within forty-five.

What a stay looks like

The Inn keeps the cadence of a working bed-and-breakfast. Guests check in in the late afternoon, warm up by the hearth, and sit down to breakfast the next morning before leaving for the day’s outing. Innkeepers can advise on current trail conditions, water levels, ski reports, and which back road is usable after last night’s storm.

Rooms are quiet and plainly furnished in the style of a nineteenth-century New England inn. Wi-Fi is universal; televisions are not.

Planning your visit

  • Summer & autumn — hiking, paddling, covered-bridge drives, foliage week in the first fortnight of October.
  • Winter — ski days at Sunday River or Mount Abram, ice-fishing on the larger lakes, a fireplace to come home to.
  • Spring — peak waterfall flow after the snowmelt; see the waterfalls index for the closest cascades.

Reserve a room

To check availability or hold a room, please use the “Book Your Stay” link in the site header or contact the front desk directly. Weekend nights in peak foliage fortnight and the opening and closing weekends of ski season fill first — book early for those dates.
